Is The Father worth watching? (No spoilers)

Worth watching

A heartbreaking look at dementia, told from inside the mind of the person losing their memory. Scenes fold back on each other, actors swap roles, and the apartment changes in tiny ways. Every scene is painful to watch, and it's masterful. Absolutely worth watching.

The Father review

Every single scene was physically painful to watch.

The Father is a heartbreaking piece on aging and dementia, and a serious look about how we cope with it.  The twisting scenes that folded back on each other were masterful, especially the changing actors and characters.

The flat itself was perfect, feeling similar in every scene but also painfully different.  The music was perfect, pulling everything together and adding to the emotions of each scene.

The Father ending explained

Throughout the film Anthony is confused about where he is, who his daughter is, and whether she lives in London or Paris. Faces and rooms keep changing. In the final scene, we learn he isn't in his flat at all; he's in a care home. His daughter Anne moved to Paris months ago, and the 'flat' was a mix of memories and his room at the home.

A nurse, Catherine (played by Olivia Williams, who we earlier saw as 'Anne'), comforts him. Anthony breaks down, saying he feels like he's losing all his leaves, and asks for his mother. She holds him and promises to take him to the park later. The last shot is the trees outside the window.

The ending explains the confusion: we've been seeing the world exactly as Anthony does. The changing actors and rooms are dementia, and the final moments show a proud man reduced to a scared child.

Does The Father have a post-credits scene?

No. The Father has no mid-credits or post-credits scene.
