Is Saturday Night worth watching? (No spoilers)

Worth watching

A fun, mostly true dramatization of the chaos behind the very first SNL. It mixes suspense and comedy well. It doesn't have a bigger message or payoff, but for a movie like this, that's okay. Worth watching if you're an SNL fan, otherwise skip it.

Saturday Night review

Saturday night is an amazing piece of the craziness of SNL's conception, dramatized enough to convey the true emotions without lying to the audience.

However it fails to do much more than that.  Sure it's an enjoyable, truish, tale.  And melds suspense and comedy quite well.  But there is no greater payoff or message, and I think thats okay for a film like this.

Saturday Night ending explained

The film plays out in close to real time over the 90 minutes before SNL's first broadcast on October 11, 1975. Lorne Michaels is fighting NBC executives, the set isn't finished, and the cast is falling apart.

In the final stretch, things start to click: a Mighty Mouse sketch works, and Chevy Chase nails an improvised Weekend Update with new jokes from writer Alan Zweibel. With the audience seated and the crew still finishing the set, NBC finally lets the show go live. John Belushi and Michael O'Donoghue perform the opening sketch, and Chevy Chase shouts the first ever 'Live from New York, it's Saturday Night!'

The point is simple: everyone expected the show to collapse, and it made it to air through sheer chaotic willpower. The film ends right where SNL's 50-year run begins.

Does Saturday Night have a post-credits scene?

There's no real post-credits scene. If you wait until the very end, you'll only hear a short bit of audio, no new footage, so you're not missing anything by leaving early.
