Is Hallow Road worth watching? (No spoilers)

Worth watching

Eighty minutes of a camera inside a car, and it's incredible. Rosamund Pike and Matthew Rhys are beyond great, the fantastical twist is introduced so gently it caught me completely off guard, and the ending lands. It had me holding my breath the whole time. Absolutely worth watching.

Hallow Road review

For 80 minutes of a camera placed in a car, you'd think Hallow Road would feel low budget in the worst ways.

The opposite couldn't be more true.  The lack of anything outside of the vehicle gives us the same sense of powerlessness and frustration that the parents are going through.

Speaking of parents, both performances were beyond incredible.  Not only the delivery of lines, but their faces of pure terror, often being held for minutes on end.  The film would be nothing without them.  Additionally, their role as the mysterious evil couple just adds one more layer to this incredible film.

The extremely gentle introduction to a more fantastical element was perfectly done and something that was entirely unexpected.  When the face changed i was so surprised I wasn't sure I heard it correctly.

The entire film left me holding my breath, and somehow managed to make the ending land!

The theme of parents protecting their child to a fault was perfectly dissected, and the slow reveal of the child's continuous mistakes, and pregnancy, was masterful.

The movie presents two ways to interpret the movie.  One is that everything we saw (or heard) happened.  The other is that the parents, stricken with grief, hallucinated some or all of the journey, and their kid truly did die as the police suspected.

I feel drawn towards the first, as to me it fits better (no need to explain when the parents stopped facing reality and how they knew where to go) and is far more terrifying.

Is Hallow Road scary?

Scare level: 3/5

Yes, but in a quiet way. You almost never see anything outside the car; the fear comes from a phone call, panicked parents, and voices in the dark. Little gore and few jump scares, just a lot of claustrophobic, breath-holding dread.

Hallow Road ending explained

Over the phone, Maddie and Frank learn that their daughter Alice is high, never called an ambulance, and ran off after a fight about her pregnancy. Then a strange woman appears on the line beside Alice. She becomes threatening, saying she and her husband 'correct' girls like Alice and will do the same to her unborn child. The voices of this mysterious couple are the parents' own (per the end credits).

When Maddie and Frank finally reach Hallow Road, there's no other car and no other girl. They find Alice's body: she died in a hit-and-run. Police conclude the parents imagined talking to her after she died, a delusion caused by trauma.

There are two ways to read it. One is that grief and guilt made the parents hallucinate some or all of the call, and the 'evil couple' is their own controlling side. However, it is extremely unclear how they would have known where to go in the first place if this is true.

The other is that everything really happened, and something supernatural was on that road.

My take: I lean toward the second. It explains how they knew where to go without needing to pinpoint when they stopped facing reality, and it's far more terrifying.

Does Hallow Road have a post-credits scene?

No. Hallow Road has no mid-credits or post-credits scene.
